Reform initiatives to accelerate growth and employment are bolstered by objective information on the conditions facing firms. Investment Climate Surveys (ICS) provide both quantitative and qualitative information on a wide range of investment climate conditions and links them to their impact on firm productivity, investment and employment.

The ICS -- including the Business Environment and Enterprise Surveys (BEEPS) joint with the EBRD -- report results from surveys of over 30,000 entrepreneurs in over 50 countries. Steps to use interactive tool:
  1. Register and agree to user responsibilities (only once)
  2. Survey selection: select country survey(s).
  3. Variable selection: choose variables of interest listed by theme
  4. Choose analytical tool (means, frequency, regressions etc.) -- with advanced options allowing user defined variables
  5. Submit request and download results
Note: confidentiality of firm respondents requires that only results generated from at least 5 records will be reported.

Among questions to which analysts can find answers in the data are:
  • How much do small, medium and large firms pay unofficially to "get things done?"
  • How do infrastructure and regulatory obstacles vary across cities in China and India?
  • How does the frequency of power outages compare between Albania and Poland?
  • How much more productive could Ethiopian garment firms be if they faced the investment climate conditions reported by garment firms in China?
  • Which investment climate obstacles most affect employment and investment?
